Underoath Brings They're Only Chasing Safety Tour to St. Paul!

By Brian Underhill

Sunshine state rockers Underoath invaded Myth Live in St. Paul on October 9th for a beautiful night of metal and good times. It had been a while since I could cover amazing music like this. What a show to come back to, and what a better opener for a Minnesota show than having our very own P.O.S. in the house to get the crowd moving! What could possibly go wrong?  NOTHING! The show went fantastic, with Underoath celebrating the 20th anniversary of their fourth album, They’re Only Chasing Safety. As mentioned before, P.O.S. opened the hometown show to a warm welcome. The hip-hop artist and rapper from Minneapolis has quite a diverse musical background. Whether it be his hip-hop roots in his solo work or when he fronted the punk bands Cenospecies, Building Better Bombs, and Wharf Rats. This was my first time seeing P.O.S., and man, did he deliver. His music and lyrics were just powerful and explosive to hear. With hit after hit getting the crowd going, it built up to the last two songs of the night We Bad and Relay. P.O.S. will be back in Minnesota on November 30th, 2024, at the Turf Club. Check him out if you can, he puts on a great show.

Up next, post-hardcore Brits Static Dress. The band hails from Leeds, West Yorkshire, and consists of vocalist Olli Appleyard, drummer Sam Ogden, bassist George Holding, and anonymous masked guitarist Contrast. They are currently signed to Roadrunner and have a bright future ahead of them. What can I say about this band? High energy, very technical, and very post-hardcore emo. The set was excellent; I was instantly hooked on songs like Crying, Sweet, Sober, and Di-SinTer. What amazed me most about seeing the band for the first time was the image of the mysterious guitarist named Contrast. The band’s sound has a twist of MCR meets the genres of Taking Back Sunday meets Senses Fail. They also use heavy riffs and emotional hooks to keep you enticed and indulged in the appearance of the song. They are showing you their homage to what they do back home in the UK. I loved everything about this band, and I instantly became a fan.

On the bill to close out the show and, the reason everyone was in the building that night was the boys from Tampa, Underoath. The band has seen their ups and downs with some inner turmoil throughout the years, but their resilience makes them one of the best bands around. With numerous albums, tour cycles, and a Grammy nod, Underoath continues to grow and keep on ticking. When the doors opened and the crowd started to funnel, the stage was lit with warm colors from lamps, and household furniture was sitting out. During the show, they invited fans on the couch to offer a unique perspective. Once they started, they never lifted their feet off the gas. With this tour being in support of the album that put the band on the map, and the first with lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, they played They’re Only Chasing Safety in its entirety, as well as a fan-voted set. They played hits like A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White, Its Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door, and Down, Set, Go to keep the crowd energized. The fan setlist included Teeth, In Regards to Myself, When the Sun Sleeps and their ending song Writing on the Walls. It was overall an incredible show. For the band that has been rocking for over 25 years, they still keep putting that youthful energy into every show that they plauyed. No matter if you are an Underoath fan from day one or only started listening to them yesterday, this was a show you will not want to miss. I highly recommend seeing Underoath if you ever get the chance. They know how to put on a metal show!

You still have the chance to see the band on their anniversary tour, as they have dates all the way through December, although given the tour’s popularity, some dates are sold out. So if you missed your chance this time around don’t worry, you’ll get the chance again, hopefully soon!
